DTF Versus Direct-to-Garment Printing

A last-minute run of 20 black hoodies can expose the difference between two print methods very quickly. You need strong white ink, reliable colour, a finish your customer will wear, and a production route that does not hold up dispatch. That is where DTF versus direct-to-garment printing becomes a practical business decision, not just a technical one.

Both methods can produce detailed, full-colour garment prints. The better option depends on what you print, how often you print, the fabrics you use and how much production equipment you want to manage. For many UK clothing sellers, print shops and side-hustle brands, the key question is simple: do you want to print straight onto garments, or press ready-made transfers when orders arrive?

DTF versus direct-to-garment printing: the core difference

Direct-to-film, or DTF, starts with a design printed onto a specialist film. Adhesive powder is applied, cured, and the finished transfer is pressed onto the garment with a heat press. Once cooled, the carrier film is peeled away to reveal the print.

Direct-to-garment, often shortened to DTG, prints ink directly onto the fabric. The garment is normally pre-treated first, particularly when printing light designs on dark cotton. It is then loaded onto a DTG printer, printed, and cured to set the ink.

The finished look can be excellent with either method. The operational difference is bigger. DTF separates printing from garment decoration: you can order transfers, keep them ready for jobs, then press them onto the right garment at the right time. DTG keeps the printing process tied to the garment and the printer, which can work well for dedicated in-house production but asks more of your workspace, equipment and operator.

Fabric choice can make the decision for you

DTG is strongest on cotton and cotton-rich garments. It is well suited to soft, high-detail prints on premium cotton T-shirts, particularly where a lighter, ink-into-the-fabric feel matters. Results on polyester and blends can be more limited, depending on the garment, ink system and preparation.

DTF is more flexible across common apparel fabrics. It can be applied to cotton, polyester, polycotton, tri-blends and many performance garments, provided the fabric can handle the required pressing temperature and pressure. That matters when your orders include workwear, teamwear, hoodies, tote bags, sportswear and mixed garment ranges.

This does not mean every transfer should go on every material without testing. Polyester can be prone to dye migration, where dye from the garment rises into a light print during or after pressing. Some technical fabrics need lower-temperature application settings. Always test a new garment style before committing to a large run, especially for white prints on red, navy or black polyester.

Print feel: soft ink versus a transfer layer

Print feel is often the first thing experienced customers ask about. With DTG, ink is absorbed into the garment fibres. On a light cotton T-shirt, a good DTG print can feel very soft because there may be little or no white underbase. This is a real advantage for fashion-led designs where the garment feel is part of the product.

On dark garments, DTG generally needs a white underbase. That adds body to the print, so the difference in feel compared with DTF can be less dramatic than many people expect. DTG can still give a softer result, but it is not automatically weightless.

DTF creates a thin, flexible printed layer on the surface of the garment. A quality transfer should stretch with the fabric, hold fine detail and retain strong colour after washing. It has more presence than a light DTG print on white cotton, yet the trade-off brings benefits: sharper colours on difficult fabrics, dependable opacity and the ability to prepare designs before the garment is even chosen.

For large solid chest prints, both methods will have a noticeable feel. For small logos, sleeve details, neck prints and detailed full-colour artwork, a well-made DTF transfer is often a very practical finish. The best choice is not about chasing the softest possible result in every case. It is about matching the finish to the garment, artwork and customer expectation.

Setup costs and the real cost of production

DTG demands a serious equipment commitment. A printer, curing equipment, pretreatment process, consumables, maintenance routine and suitable workspace all form part of the setup. White ink systems need regular care. If the printer sits unused, maintenance does not stop, and blocked nozzles or inconsistent output can quickly affect delivery dates.

That investment can make sense for an established operation with steady DTG volume, a focused cotton garment range and staff who can run the process every day. It gives direct control over production and can be efficient when the machine is kept busy.

DTF lets smaller and growing businesses avoid owning the transfer-printing equipment. You still need a dependable heat press and a controlled pressing process, but you do not need to print, powder and cure every design yourself.
